Driver Qualifications

  • Valid CDL
  • Current DOT medical certificate (Medical Examiner's Certificate).
  • Participation in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Compliance with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements (pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up).

Hours of Service (HOS)

Drivers must comply with federal HOS regulations, including:

  • Maximum 11 hours driving after 10 consecutive hours off duty.
  • 14-hour driving window after coming on duty.
  • 30-minute break after 8 cumulative hours of driving.
  • 70-hour weekly limits, depending on carrier operations.
  • Accurate Electronic Logging Device (ELD) records, unless exempt.

Vehicle Safety

  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Complete Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) when required.
  • Ensure all repairs are completed before operating an unsafe vehicle.
  • Maintain tires, brakes, lights, steering, and coupling devices.

Cargo Securement

  • Properly secure all cargo.
  • Comply with weight limits and axle requirements.
  • Follow additional regulations for hazardous materials if applicable.

Required Documents

Drivers should have:

  • CDL
  • Medical certification (when required)
  • ELD records or logbook
  • Shipping papers/Bill of Lading
  • Hazardous materials documentation (if applicable)

Roadside Inspections

Drivers must cooperate with DOT officers during inspections by:

  • Providing required documents.
  • Allowing vehicle inspections.
  • Correcting violations promptly to avoid fines or out-of-service orders.

Compliance Responsibilities

Drivers should:

  • Wear seat belts at all times.
  • Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Avoid distracted driving, including texting or handheld phone use.
  • Report accidents according to company policy and FMCSA requirements.
  • Follow company safety policies and FMCSA regulations.
